We stock and install DoorKing-compatible keypads and intercom systems across Dallas, and most replacements run between $380 and $850 installed, parts and labor included. Same-day service is available in most cases because we keep the common DoorKing units on our trucks. The usual way an owner finds us is they’ve got a keypad that works when it feels like it, or an intercom where visitors say the call rings but nobody can hear anything on either end.
Below we cover the models, the symptoms, the real cost, and what’s safe to touch versus what should be left to someone who does this every week. If you’d rather just talk it through, call us at (325) 225-5440 and describe what the unit is doing. As Dean Prescott likes to say, “Tell me what it’s doing and what it stopped doing – that’s usually ninety percent of the diagnosis right there.”
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
The parts we install cover the DoorKing 1500, 1502, 1504, and 1510 series telephone entry systems, plus the 1812 and 1838 access control keypads, and the standalone 8064 and 8065 keypad controllers. If you’re not sure which model you have, open the front cover and look for the metal tag inside the enclosure – DoorKing stamps the model number there, usually on the upper-left corner. The keypad itself often has no visible model marking once the housing is mounted, so always check the enclosure tag, not the keypad face.
One DoorKing-specific gotcha worth knowing: the 1812 is a 12-volt system and the 1838 runs on 24 volts, and they are not interchangeable despite looking nearly identical behind the faceplate. Wiring the wrong one in will fry the keypad board. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question, DoorKing’s own replacement keypads and intercom boards are built for a 7-to-10-year service life in our climate, while most quality aftermarket equivalents run closer to 5-to-7 years. We stock both, and we’ll show you the price difference before we order anything.

Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Intermittent keypad response. You press a code three times before it registers, or it only works in the morning. That’s usually worn carbon contacts on the keypad membrane, and it gets progressively worse until the unit stops accepting codes entirely.
- One side of the intercom audio dies. Visitors hear you but you can’t hear them, or vice versa. On DoorKing systems this usually points to a failed speaker-mic module on the board, and it’s not a wiring issue you can fix by jiggling anything.
- The unit works but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad beeps and the relay clicks, but the gate operator doesn’t respond. This is often a burnt relay contact on the DoorKing board, which means the keypad is fine but the switching circuit has failed.
- Codes stopped working after a power surge or storm. Dallas gets real lightning, and DoorKing boards don’t love it. If the keypad resets to factory defaults or loses its programmed codes after a storm, the memory chip or the board itself has taken a hit.
- Water or corrosion inside the enclosure. You open the cover and see rust, mineral streaks, or standing moisture. DoorKing enclosures are weather-resistant, but a decade of North Texas rain and humidity will eventually find a way in, and corrosion on the ribbon connectors is a slow killer.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Dallas, most DoorKing keypad and intercom repairs land between $380 and $850 installed. A basic keypad swap on a 1812 or 1500-series system typically runs $380 to $520 parts and labor. A full intercom board replacement with a new speaker-mic module runs higher, usually $550 to $850, because the part cost alone is substantial and the board replacement requires re-pinning several connectors.
Every price we give is written down before we start, so there’s no surprise when the invoice comes. The quote includes the part, the labor, the programming of your existing codes and directory, and testing the full call-to-gate sequence before we leave. And the Kingswell Guarantee covers the repair for 365 days: if it fails during that year, we come back and fix it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things you can safely check yourself: confirm the keypad has power (most DoorKing units show a lit or flashing LED), check the enclosure for obvious water damage, and verify nothing chewed through the low-voltage wire running from the house to the gate. If the unit is completely dead, check the breaker first – it happens more than you’d think.
What we’d leave alone is anything beyond opening the cover and looking. These run on low voltage, so you’re not going to hurt yourself like you would with a spring or a high-tension cable, but probing a DoorKing board with a multimeter without knowing the pinout can turn a $400 repair into an $800 board replacement. If the keypad has power and still won’t behave, call (325) 225-5440. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a part swap or something simpler, and the estimate is free.
FAQs
A DoorKing keypad or intercom board in the Dallas area typically lasts 7 to 10 years before the keypad membrane wears out or corrosion from humidity takes a toll. Units in full afternoon sun and units on gates near sprinkler overspray tend to die on the earlier end of that range. If yours has made it past ten years, you’ve gotten your money’s worth and a replacement is the better call than another repair.
Call (325) 225-5440 and we’ll help you assess whether a part swap makes sense or whether you’re at the replacement point.
Sometimes, yes. We can replace just the keypad membrane, the relay, or the speaker-mic module on many DoorKing boards rather than swapping the whole unit. That typically saves $80 to $150 versus a full board replacement. But if the board has multiple failed components, or if corrosion has spread across the traces, a new board is the honest recommendation. We’ll show you what’s wrong before we order anything.
Most DoorKing keypad and intercom replacements in Dallas take 60 to 90 minutes from the time our technician starts to the moment your codes are re-programmed and the gate cycles correctly. If we’re dealing with a corroded enclosure or re-pinning multiple connectors, plan on two hours. We give you a real arrival window when you book, and we show up in it.
We keep the common DoorKing 1812 and 1838 keypads, replacement membranes, relays, and intercom boards on the truck, along with parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. If your specific model needs an ordered part, we’ll tell you before the visit. Most Dallas replacements are done same-day because the common parts are already on board.
If your DoorKing keypad or intercom is acting up, call us at (325) 225-5440 for a free estimate. We’ll give you a number over the phone, and if it makes sense to come out, you’ll get a written price before any work starts. That’s the Kingswell way, and it’s how we’ve done every job since 2008.
