When a DoorKing gate hinge tears loose from its post or a weld cracks on the frame, welding and fabrication work in Dallas typically runs between $280 and $650 for most residential repairs, and we can usually get a welder to your property same-day or next morning. The job almost never calls for a new gate; it calls for the broken joint to be cut clean, re-welded with the gate squared up properly, and the surrounding steel reinforced so the same failure doesn’t come back. Most owners discover the problem the way you probably just did: the gate started dragging on the driveway, a hinge looked cocked, or the opener started laboring because the geometry shifted. That’s the symptom picture for a weld failure, and it’s one we see weekly across Dallas, from Preston Hollow to Mesquite.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing gate hardware spans three broad lines: residential swing gate operators like the 9150 and 6050 series, light-commercial operators like the 1601 and 1602 series, and the heavier 6100 and 6500 series used on community entrances. Welding and fabrication applies to the gate itself, the steel posts, and the mounting plates more than to the operator, but every one of those DoorKing models relies on a gate that swings true. A welded repair has to maintain the factory geometry: blade height, hinge alignment, and the pickup point for the operator arm. Get any of those off by half an inch and the DoorKing unit will fault out repeatedly. That’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t see coming. The fix isn’t just “weld it back” – it’s weld it back so the operator sees the exact same gate it was tuned for.
On the parts question, when we do need to reinforce a broken hinge plate or rebuild a gate frame section, we stock common thickset steel plate, square tube, and weld-on hinge assemblies on the truck. DoorKing’s OEM hinge kits for the 9150 and 1601 models are well made, but the mounting plate on the post is usually the point that fails first, not the hinge itself. In Dallas, we spec 1/4-inch steel plate for post repairs rather than the 3/16-inch material some aftermarket kits ship with; the heavier plate holds up better to our heat cycles and the wind load that comes off the lakes. Portcullis Gate Repair Dallas is an independent service provider; we’re not affiliated with DoorKing. We just fix the gates their operators move every day.

Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags at the latch end and scrapes the driveway. This usually means the top hinge weld has stretched or cracked and the gate blade has rotated out of square under its own weight.
- The opener sounds strained and the gate moves slower than it used to. When a weld fails, the gate’s weight shifts onto the operator arm outside its designed arc, so the motor pulls harder to cover the same travel.
- You can see daylight between the hinge plate and the post. If there’s a visible gap or rust-colored dust around a hinge plate, the weld is no longer holding. The rust dust is the tell – that’s metal fretting under load.
- The gate wobbles side-to-side when you push it by hand. A healthy gate moves only along its swing arc. Lateral movement means a hinge barrel is worn or a weld at the post has begun to flex.
- The DoorKing operator trips its limit or force error repeatedly. Once the gate geometry shifts, the opener’s force sensor detects the change and shuts down mid-cycle, usually with a fault code that has nothing to do with the operator itself.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical Dallas residential swing gate, our welding and fabrication repairs land in these ranges:
- Hinge plate re-weld, single side: $180 – $320, including grinding the old weld, re-squaring the gate, and re-welding with the heavier plate where it’s needed.
- Cracked gate frame repair: $220 – $450, depending on whether we’re patching one crack or cutting out and sleeving a rotted section of tube steel.
- Broken post repair: $280 – $550. This includes straightening or shimming the post, welding a reinforced collar, and re-hanging the gate to factory spec.
- Full post replacement: $600 – $950 for a cut, set, and weld job with a new steel post set in concrete per local Dallas soil conditions.
Those numbers are parts and labor, quoted in writing before any work starts. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee on the repair, and it covers the full job for 365 days. If the weld fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. What drives the range is mostly access and the condition of the surrounding steel. If the post is rotted into garbage, there’s nothing to weld to, and that moves us from patch to replacement. You’ll know which one you’re dealing with before we start cutting.
Dean Prescott’s been running gate repair crews in Dallas long enough to tell you the North Texas heat does things to steel that nobody warned him about when he moved here. Expansion and contraction over a 40-degree swing, day after day, will fatigue a marginal weld faster than rust ever does. That’s why we do the reinforcement work the way we do: cut clean, weld hot, and plate it so the next Texas summer isn’t the thing that splits it again.
DIY or Call Us?
If you can see a crack, a gap, or a hinge pulling away, you’ve already done the useful DIY part – you found the failure before it dropped the gate on a car. What you shouldn’t do is fire up a flux-core welder from the hardware store and start stacking beads on a gate that’s still hung, still under tension, and still carrying three hundred pounds of steel. A swing gate under load is a pinch hazard, and a bad weld on a hinge plate will look fine until it shears. That’s how people get hurt and gates get ruined. Welding on a gate that’s still connected to a DoorKing operator is also a good way to fry the control board; we disconnect and isolate the operator before any welding happens.
Call (325) 225-5440 and one of our welders will come out, square the gate, tell you what it needs, and give you a written price before anything gets cut. If it’s a simple plate repair, we’re usually done the same day.
FAQs
A properly reinforced weld on a residential gate should last 10 to 15 years in Dallas, provided the post wasn’t already compromised and the gate stays balanced. Ours is guaranteed in writing for 365 days, and if it fails inside that year, the return visit is free.
Yes, in most cases the existing hinge and plate can be re-welded after the old bead is ground out and the gate is re-squared. We replace the hinge only when the barrel itself is worn egg-shaped or the pin is seized beyond saving. That decision gets made with you, with a price on the table, before we start.
A single hinge plate re-weld on a residential DoorKing gate usually takes two to three hours from setup to final adjustment. A post replacement or full frame repair is a half-day job, sometimes a little more depending on concrete work.
We stock common hinge plates, heavy-gauge steel reinforcement plate, and square tube on the truck, along with compatible DoorKing hinge kits for the 9150 and 1601 series. We also keep repair parts on hand for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operator systems when the opener needs attention at the same visit. Call (325) 225-5440 and we’ll tell you what’s on the truck today.
