We stock and install DoorKing access control systems throughout Dallas, with most installed jobs running between $850 and $2,400 depending on the model, the number of entry points, and whether we’re swapping a failed component or building out a full keypad-to-maglock setup. Same-day service is available when we have the part on the truck, which covers the most common DoorKing keypads, telephone entry boards, and card readers. Most Dallas owners call us after the system stops recognizing codes, the keypad goes dead, or the gate opens fine for them but not for the delivery driver who just called from the street.
This page is the straight answer on DoorKing access control installation in Dallas: what we stock, what it costs, what fails first in North Texas weather, and whether you should touch it yourself. Dean Prescott has been working on DoorKing gear long enough to tell you the heat does more damage to circuit boards than people expect.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing makes access control gear across several series, and they aren’t all interchangeable. The model numbers you’ll see most in Dallas are the 1812 series (classic telephone entry with a metal keypad), the 1830 series (adds a directory display), and the 6050/6100 keypad controllers that tie into swing and slide gate operators. The 1515 and 1506 card readers are the ones we pull off apartment gates and HOA entrances in North Dallas and Richardson most often.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips people up: a DoorKing 1812 access controller from 2012 and one from 2022 look nearly identical from the outside, but the newer revision runs a different firmware and won’t accept the old wiring harness without an adapter board. We check the serial number inside the housing, not the faceplate, before quoting. On the OEM versus aftermarket question for DoorKing specifically, we stock OEM boards and housings because the aftermarket keypad membranes for the 1812 series have a shorter life in Texas sun, and the savings aren’t worth a call back in six months when the buttons stop reading.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad accepts some codes but not others. This usually means the output relay is wearing out or a single zone contact has failed. The board still powers on, so it looks like a programming problem when it’s actually a dying relay.
- Display shows garbage characters or half the screen goes dark. On the 1830 series, that’s the LCD driver board failing under heat. Dallas summers bake these units when they’re mounted facing west with no shade, and we see this pattern constantly in Plano and Garland.
- Gate opens by itself or won’t close after you enter a code. That’s often a stuck relay on the control board, or a short in the loop detector wiring. It reads like a ghost, but it’s a physical contact failing.
- You hear a click but nothing moves. The access controller is sending the signal but the gate operator isn’t receiving it. Could be a wiring break between the keypad and the operator, or a burned contact on the operator’s input board.
- Call box works but the phone line entry doesn’t. On DoorKing systems using a phone line or cellular dialer, the voice board fails independently of the keypad. We replace just the voice module when possible, which saves a few hundred dollars over a full board swap.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A single DoorKing keypad or card reader swap in Dallas typically runs $180 to $420 installed. A full access control system with keypad, controller board, wiring, and gate integration runs $1,200 to $2,400 for most single-family and small commercial gates. If you’re adding telephone entry or cellular access, the top end of that range applies.
Every quote is written before we touch a single wire. The price includes the part, the labor, the wiring check, and the programming of your entry codes. Here’s what drives the range: how far the keypad sits from the operator, whether we need to pull new wire through conduit under a driveway, and whether the old board can be flashed to current firmware instead of replaced. We carry the common DoorKing boards, keypads, and readers on the truck, which holds the price down because we’re not making two trips.
DIY or Call Us?
Access control work is low-voltage, but that doesn’t make it safe to guess at. The electrical side of a gate operator carries 120V or 240V at the transformer, and the capacitor on the operator board can hold a charge even after you cut power. If you’re replacing a keypad faceplate or cleaning the card reader contacts, that’s fine to do yourself with the power off at the breaker.
Where DIY goes wrong is the wiring. DoorKing color codes their harnesses, but older Dallas installs have been spliced, re-spliced, and patched by previous owners and handymen. We’ve walked up to gates where the blue wire is doing a job the orange wire was hired for. When you call us at (325) 225-5440, we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a five-minute fix you can handle or whether we need to roll a truck. Either way, you’ll know what you’re dealing with before we ever step on the property.
FAQs
A properly installed DoorKing keypad or controller typically lasts 8 to 12 years in Dallas, but units mounted in direct afternoon sun without a shade hood usually fail in 5 to 7 years because the heat degrades the keypad membrane and LCD driver boards faster than the electronics themselves. Call (325) 225-5440 if your unit is over six years old and acting up, and we’ll tell you whether it’s worth repairing or replacing.
Yes, we can repair many DoorKing boards by replacing the failed relay, capacitor, or solder joint on the bench, which typically costs $95 to $180 compared to $240 to $480 for a new OEM board. Some boards can’t be reliably repaired, especially ones with water damage or a burned trace, and we’ll show you the board and explain why before suggesting a replacement.
A straight keypad or card reader swap takes 45 minutes to 2 hours when we have the part on the truck. A full system install with new wiring and gate integration usually takes a half day, which is why we schedule those as a morning appointment so your gate is working again before the afternoon heat really sets in.
We stock DoorKing keypads, controller boards, card readers, and power supplies for the 1812, 1830, 6050, and 1515 series on our trucks, and we also carry parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls. If your part isn’t on the truck, we can usually have it in hand within 1 to 2 business days and schedule the install before the end of the week.
