Linear Gate Motor Replacement: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

If your Linear gate operator has stopped moving the gate, a motor replacement in Dallas typically runs $450 – $900 installed, depending on the model and whether we’re swapping just the motor or the full operator head. We stock Linear-compatible motors and carry most common replacement parts on the truck, so most swaps happen in a single visit. The usual discovery is this: the gate worked fine yesterday, and today the control board clicks but the gate doesn’t budge, or the motor hums and then trips its internal breaker. That’s the failure profile we see most often across Dallas neighborhoods like Lake Highlands, Preston Hollow, and Richardson.

Before you assume the worst, let’s walk through what actually fails on these units, how to match the right part, and what an honest replacement costs. Dean Prescott, owner of Portcullis Gate Repair Dallas, will tell you the same thing he tells every caller: “Tell me what it’s doing and what it stopped doing – that’s usually ninety percent of the diagnosis right there.”

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear’s residential swing and slide gate operators span several series, and the motor isn’t universal across them. The most common units we service in Dallas are the Linear LRA, LS, and APS series. The LRA series (LRA-1, LRA-3, LRA-5) uses a specific 24V DC motor with a pinion gear that drives the swing arm. The LS series slide operators use a different motor entirely – heavier, often 1/2 HP or greater, built to pull a rolling gate along a track. The APS series (advanced power systems) uses what Linear calls an “actuator,” the motorized arm that physically pushes the gate open, and those are mounted differently than the LRA motors.

The fastest way to match the right part is to look at the metal tag on the side of the operator box or the back of the control board. It lists the model and serial, and usually a date code. If that tag is weathered off – and in North Texas sun, that happens often – we match by measuring the mounting plate and checking the motor shaft diameter. One gotcha we run into regularly: a good number of Dallas gates use an LRA-3 control board with an LRA-5 motor that another company swapped in years ago. Mixing series parts without checking torque specs works until it doesn’t. We confirm before we order.

As for OEM vs. aftermarket: Linear factory motors are solid, but there are quality aftermarket equivalents made to the same voltage and torque specs that save $60 – $120 on some models. We’ll quote both options when both are reliable, and we’ll tell you honestly when an aftermarket motor isn’t worth the savings on that particular unit.

Signs Your Linear Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • Motor hums, gate doesn’t move. This usually points to a burned capacitor or a seized gearbox. The motor is getting power but can’t transfer it to the arm or chain. On Linear slide units, this is often the first sign of a gearbox bearing going dry in the Dallas heat.
  • Gate moves a few inches, then stops and reverses. The obstruction sensor or the motor’s torque limiter is fighting a binding gate. If the gate itself swings freely by hand, the motor is the prime suspect. If it doesn’t swing freely, you’ve got a hinge or wheel problem that will kill a new motor fast if ignored.
  • You hear a grinding or clicking from the operator box. That’s the pinion gear or drive sprocket stripping. On Linear LRA units, the nylon gear inside the motor housing wears over time, especially here where gates expand and contract through 100-degree summers and the occasional ice storm.
  • The gate opens halfway and stops dead. This is often thermal overload. The motor builds heat faster than it can shed it. North Texas heat plus a motor that’s been slowly laboring against a sagging gate equals an early death.
  • Breaker trips every time the gate cycles. A failing motor draws more current than the board is rated to handle. The control board may still be good, but every trip is another flex on its relays. Keep letting it trip, and you’ll be replacing the board too.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For most Linear residential operators, a full motor replacement in Dallas runs $450 – $900 with parts and labor. On the lower end, that’s an aftermarket motor on an LRA series unit with a simple swap and no wiring surprises. On the higher end, you’re looking at an OEM Linear motor for an LS slide operator, plus a new drive sprocket and a torque adjustment. If the control board has been damaged by the failing motor – and it happens in maybe one out of four cases – add $200 – $350 for a replacement board.

Here’s the breakdown we typically see:

Item Typical Dallas Range
Linear LRA motor (aftermarket equivalent) $180 – $260
Linear LRA motor (OEM) $260 – $360
Linear LS slide motor $320 – $520
Labor (motor swap, torque set, limit check) $180 – $320
Control board replacement (if needed) $200 – $350

Every job gets a written price before any work starts. That includes the motor, the labor, and any mounting hardware. If we open the box and find a damaged board or stripped gear we didn’t quote, we stop and walk you through the updated number before moving forward. The repair carries a written guarantee under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the replacement motor fails inside that year, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself. Make sure the operator has power. Look at the breaker and the GFCI outlet if the unit plugs in. Inspect the gate itself – does it swing or slide freely by hand with the operator disengaged? A gate that binds at the hinges or wheels isn’t a motor problem, and a new motor won’t fix it.

Replacing the motor itself is a different story. These operators run on line voltage, and every Linear unit has capacitors that store charge even after the unit is unplugged. You can get a serious shock from a capacitor that hasn’t been discharged. There’s also the mechanical reality: these gate arms and slide chains are under constant load, and releasing that load incorrectly can throw a chain or slam a gate. We recommend a trained service call for any motor swap to keep you and the gate in one piece. Call us at (325) 225-5440 and we’ll match the motor, set the torque, and stand behind the work.
